Pillow Talk (1959)

Starring: Rock Hudson (Giant), Doris Day (Calamity Jane) and Tony Randall (The Odd Couple)

First Impressions Before Seeing The Film?

This was one of the DVDs my Grandma had, I saw Doris Day previously in Calamity Jane and I thought her acting was one of the best I've seen in a while I think I was around 13/14 years old because I remember I was still in high school when I saw this film. At this age, I was just discovering what actors really are and where they can go. My grandma loved Doris Day, I remember a Doris Day boxset just in the corner near the television and I thought I give this film ago, not only because of my grandma because we both have similar taste in films.

After I watched the film?

"A man and woman share a telephone line and despise each other, but then he has fun by romancing her with his voice disguised." This was from IMDB, and I have to be honest there's so much more than that in this film. We have comedy, romance and 'love' it's a very typical Doris Day film where they find true love. But, having it being through a telephone line who they don't see each other and have arguments all the time. And, suddenly bump into each other and 'fall in love' it's the typical romance feel but has elements of comedy in there. It reminds me if I have to compare it to another film 'The Proposal' with Sandra Bullock or 'I Married An Axe Murderer' with Mike Myers (no axe murderers but comedy wise similarities). It's a very nice warm feeling when watching this film. Doris Day didn't surprise me but did. As actors, we are suppose to get into character and become this character. From, Calamity Jane in the wild wild west era to the back then the modern times. I could see very similarities and back then Doris Day was a high point of Hollywood Media. She made this film because of her acting but also the storyline was brilliant and the romance was really executed beautifully. The music as well was brilliant, Doris Day sings the opening of the film. One of my favourite songs, is when they are in the bar and talking and it's called 'Roly Poly' sung by Doris Day, Perry Blackwell and Rock Hudson.

Is it worth watching in 2014?

Am going to be honest here, yes it is. Here's why, people know the Notebook, P.S I Love You and even Last Song but compare it to an old romance the public has something different to look at. Forget it's from 1959, think of it as if you want a new romance and want something different try this! It is truly a great film, the acting is similar to what we have today. It's cheesy romance, not full on cheesy but it's simple and pure. Which is why I would watch it right now in my Superman slippers! It's just a great film to watch with the family, lovers and even friends.

So, what's the bottom line?

Watch it that's the bottom line, if you like your soppy, romance and you'll have a tear at the end of a film because it can happen then this film is for you.

Tips if watching the film?

  1.  If it's a group of you girlies that fancy this film, make sure you have that tub of Ben and Jerry's ice cream and pj's on and the whole face mask and doing nails because it's a typical romance film to be fully enjoyed the right way to do it. So, the guys can go in the other room and watch football or what ever guys do. Personally, poker but if it's a chance to watch this film "HELLO LADIES, MY NAILS NEED A DOIN!" and make sure that ice cream is low fat too!
  2. If it's with your hubby/girlfriend just make sure that's it because it's a soppy film and if either one of you like this film it's really a cute cute cute cutie film to watch with the ones closest to you.
  3. If it's just you and a group of friends, still watch it because it has a nice good feel to it....when this film is finished I remember me and my Grandma then just get some popcorn and watch the next feel good film....usually it's Hairspray haha.

My rankings
Am shocked that IMDB users gave this a 7.5, I mean shall we round that to an 8! I mean, come on! I gave it a 9 simply because Doris Day has the emotions of a modern day woman, it's not fake. It's there!
